Information on James Heathcock was given verbally to Clayton Heathcock, Jr., by Lilly Belle Heathcock in about 1976. According to her, James J. Heathcock was Sheriff of Wilson Co TX from November 6 1900 until November 4, 1902. Family tradition holds that he was a hemopheliac and died at a relatively young age and he never married. However, this tradition is incorrect. After his term as Sheriff of Wilson County, he married in 1907 and moved South, to Webb Co TX, which is on the Mexican border, and died there in 1936 at age 63.
J. J. Heathcock is mentioned in a number of articles printed in the San Antonio Light in 1907-1918. In 1907 he was foreman of a jury in the trial of a Gustav Naurath, who was convicted of murder. After the trial, Neurath’s attorney asked for a new trial on the grounds that Heathcock had stated before the trial began that Neurath was guilty. In 1911 there were several announcements in the “Personal Mention” section that J. J. Heathcock was visiting in San Antonio and staying at the Crockett Hotel. In the 22 June and 5 July 1911 issues, he was identified as Deputy Sherriff of Huntsville. In the 7 December 1911 Light, he was identified as being “officially connected with the penitentiary at Huntsville.” In the 21 September 1918 issue, it was stated that “J. J. Heathcock, a business man of Thermal Wells, arrived in the city last night and is registered at the Crockett Hotel.
