Mrs. Jane James Joins the Silent Majority.
Jane Duck was born in Pulaski County, Kentucky, December 8, 1819; married to James E. James in Edgar county, Illinois, in 1838; moved with her late husband to Jasper county in 1839; and departed this life at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. A.M. Isley, at Riverton, Ill, Monday, Dec 10, 1906, aged 87 years and 2 days.
To Mr. and Mrs. James thirteen children were born, four of whom are living, the fifth not having been heard from for several years, viz: Mrs. A.M. (Mary) Isley, Riverton; Mrs. Laura Barker and J.A. James, Newton; and Alonzo James, Geary, Oklahoma. William James formerly lived in Oregon. Whether yet alive is unknown. Of Other relatives, Mrs. Sarah C. barker is a daughter-in-law, her first husband, Cyrus James, being a son. Mrs. James P. Prestley and Mrs. Clarence Moulden are grand-daughters. There are surviving 25 grandchildren, 18 great-grand children and many other relations more distant.
Deceased was a noble woman, a true, earnest and sincere christian. She and her husband came to Jasper county when it was almost an unbroken wilderness and Newton a village of not exceeding 50 to 100 population. Their labor and influence had much to do in assisting to develop the country and better society.
He was a man of character and ability, and was often honored by the people, who elected him associate judge in 1849; sheriff in 1856; and county judge 1864, serving until his death, August 29, 1872.
Mrs. James had been a long and patient sufferer from Bright’s disease. She made her home with Mrs. Laura Barker, whose tender, loving care was always that of an affectionate child.
A couple of months ago Grand-Ma James and Mrs. Barker left this city for a visit with Mrs. Isley in Sangamon county; there the old lady became seriously ill and never got up from the sickness, gradually passing out to eternal sleep.
The remains will be brought to this city on the 3:42 p.m. Illinois Central train today and tomorrow morning Requiem Mass will be celebrated at St. Thomas Catholic church, after which the interment will occur at the parish cemetery.
