Notes for Catherine “Kate” Goodbread
CATHERINE "KATE" GOODBREAD,727 - believed to be a daughter of Phillip I and Catherine Goodbread, was born about 1767 and married about 1789 Samuel Mead, son of Robert Mead and his wife Hannah, who is thought to be a daughter of Mary Mead Rhodes of Bedford Co., VA. They lived on the headwaters of Big Sandy River in Floyd Co., KY. where she died before 1850. For Catherine "Kate" Goodbread, daughter of Phillip Goodbread, Sr. to be the wife of Samuel Mead it would seem that he would have had to have been in Rutherford or Burke Co., NC. There are no Meads on the 1790 census in either of these counties. However, the 1782 tax list of Rutherford Co. shows two Meades, James and William as tax payers. Perhaps Samuel met Kate Goodbread while he was visiting relatives in Rutherford Co., NC. Since the Mead Family History states they married in Bedford Co., VA, it is possible that Kate Goodbread went with some of these Meads to Virginia. Since there is no marriage record in either North Carolina or Virginia we can only speculate.

In Mead Relations a letter from J. P. Mead in 1917 stated "My great grandfather, whose name was Robert Mead, lived in Bedford County, VA; and in that county my grandfather Samuel Mead about 1784 (?) married Katy Goodbread and moved to this part of the country in 1794". The author of this book discounted the dates shown in this letter, stating Robert Mead disposed of his lands in Bedford County in 1801 and is believed to have gone to Kentucky at that time. Both Robert and Samuel Mead are on Bedford County, VA tax list in 1782. Undoubtedly Samuel Mead was in Rutherford Co., NC when he married Kate Goodbread, but no records have been found of the marriage. Their first son, Samuel, born 1794 was born in SC. Their second child, Robert, on the 1850 census Floyd Co., KY states he was born in 1796 in VA. So possibly they married in Rutherford Go., NC about 1792-93, lived for awhile in South Carolina, and moved to Bedford Co., VA briefly before settling on the Headwaters of the Big Sandy River in Floyd County, KY. Samuel Mead is not on the tax lists, publihed as substitutes for the 1790 and 1800 census of Kentucky. It is probable they moved to Kentucky in 1801 at the same time as his father Robert.

Both Samuel and his father Robert Mead are on the 1810 census of Floyd Co., KY. Samuel and Kate are both listed as born between 1765 and 1784. At that time they had nine children: 2 boys and 2 girls born between 1800-1810; 2 boys and 1 girl born between 1794-1800 and two older boys, born between 1784-1794. We believe they had two daughters born after 1819 from subsequent records found on their families. Two of the males on the 1810 census are unaccounted for, one born between 1784-1794 and one born between 1794-1800. There is no record in Jillson's three books on Kentucky land grants showing Samuel Mead was granted any land, and evidently both he and Kate died before the 1850 census. In Cemetery Records of Floyd Co., KY, Vol. 3 by Joe K. Skeens there is listed a Samuel Mead Cemetery, located 1 mile up Toler Creek on Rt. 1426, off Rt 979, Harold KY. There are 17 graves with no markers. Sam Mead's grave is marked but has no dates.

Samuel and Kate (Goodbread) Mead had nine known children, shown in the probable order of birth:
<1> Samuel Mead, Jr. born about 1790;
<2> Robert "Big Bob" Mead born about 1796;
<3> Isabel Mead born about 1800 married Joseph Sallings;
<4> Kesiah Mead born about 1802;
<5> Thomas Mead born about 1804;
<6> Rhodes Mead born about 1805;
<7> Priscilla Mead born about 1806;
<8> Elizabeth Mead, born 1810, died 1870, married John Baldridge;
<9> Katherine Mead, born about 1811, married 24 Apr. 1828 Elijah Kennedy. Her father, Samuel Mead gave his consent (Pike Co., KY License 195) (1 known ch shown on Floyd Co. birth records as Catherine C. "Canady", daughter of Elijah Canady and Katherine Mead) .
