Notes for Sarah (Spouse 1)
SARAH GOODBREAD,55 - daughter of Phillip and Nancy (Webb) Goodbread was born about 1822, probably in Burke Co. NC. Her death date is unknown. She was still alive in 1889 when she sold her property in Kimble County to the Railroad. Sarah married sometime around 1837/38, possibly in Shelby County, TX, Mattin West. Shelby County records were destroyed by fire in 1882, but an 1837 Tax list exists and Martin West is there, living next to James West and his son Hampton. It is believed that Martin West was a nephew of James West and that possibly Martin West's father was a John West. By various census records, Martin West was born about 1814 in Georgia.

Martin West did not arrive in Texas until between March 2, 1836 and Oct. 1, 1837, as evidenced by his Second Class' Headright Certificate for 1280 acres of land. In 1840 Martin West is found on the Payroll of Capt. Saunders Co. in the Sommerville Campaign. In 1846 he is on the Texas Poll List in Grimes County. In 1847 he was granted Headright Certificate 130, Robertson Land District, File 213, for 1280 acres. The Certificate was dated 15 Aug. 1847 and on 29 Apr. 1848 Martin West of Grimes Co. sold this Headright for $250.00 to B. J. Chambers, for whom the land was patented on the Trinity River in Dallas Co.

It was about this time I believe that his brother-in-law, Creed Taylor, persuaded Martin to move to Bexar County, in that part which became Wilson County. Martin West and family are on the 1850 and 1860 census of Bexar County and 1870 census Wilson County. Just when they moved to Kimble County, or when he died is unknown. He signed deeds with Sarah his wife in Wilson County in 1873 and again in 1877. In 1880 Sarah West is found living in Wilson County with her daughter, Ophelia Crane. In 1888 Sarah and all her children sell land in Wilson County, obviously part of the Estate of Martin West. In 1888 Sarah West of Kimble County sold her 310 acres of land to the Gulf, West Texas and Pacific Railroad, retaining five years right to live on the place, and states in the deed "where I have been living for the past 12 years", putting the family in Kimble County by 1876.

In the division of the Estate of Phillip Goodbread and his son Phillip R. Goodbread, Sarah and her husband Martin West received Lot No. 1 of the Grimes land and Lot No.4 of the 1/3 League of Land in Wilson, Karnes and Gonzales Counties, being the Headright of Sarah's brother Phillip R. Goodbread, deceased. Martin and Sarah West sold the land known as Lot No.4 to S. C. Ware for $300.00 on the 10th of July 1873 (Gonzales Co. Deed Bk 4, p 127). Sarah West, widow, of Kimble County, TX sold her inheritance of Grimes Co. land 1 Jan. 1889 to N. B. Ware for $800.00. N. B. Ware was the husband of Sarah's niece Cebelle Gillespie-Ware.
