George b about 1740 in Brunswick County, Va, d about 1792 in Rutherford County, N.C. George continued to live in Brunswick County at least through 1774 when he was one of the tithers in the Episcopal Church Meherren Parish Book 13. On 30 Jan 1774 George and wife Elizabeth sold to John Taylor 400 acres, Brunswick Deed Book 11, p 285. Clarence W. Griffin in his History of Old Tyron and Rutherford Counties, North Carolina 1730-1936, Miller Printing Co., Asheville, N. C. (1937) p 117, says "George Ledbetter, a member of the Conventions (to ratify the Constitution of U.S.) of 1788 and 89, was a man of unusual ability, well educated for his day, and one of the county's (Rutherford, N.C.) leading men. He was an officer in the Revolution and Commanded a company under Col. Andrew Hampton at the Battle of Kings Mountain. He served as Justice of the Peace in Rutherford County from 1784 to 1791. He shortened his days by too free use of spiritous liquors." See Revolutionary War. A George is also shown as a member of the Georgia Conventions of 1788 and of 1789.812
