George's only recorded appearance in Pittsylvania is witnessing a deed in 1788 for David Lay, Sr. George is bondsman for the Sarah Lay-Gideon Vaughn marriage in Caswell Co., NC, 9 Feb, 1790. J. Gilbert Lay's Lay Family Genealogy records a Bible record which states that George Lay came from England to Virginia (conflicting dates given) as an infant and perhaps lived in Henry Co. VA before moving into Rockingham Co., NC and finally, settling in Livingston Co., KY. A search of Henry Co , VA Tax Lists for the late 1700's did not unearth any Lays. Surviving tax lists for early Rockingham Co., NC are non-existent.591
