Notes for Andrew Dumas Adair
Following family story from Nell Adair Lewis:
All of the children of Edward Lee Adair were strong willed people and from all accounts often went against the will of their parents. When Dee was just a small boy...and by small, according to all the family stories, he must have been only about age 6, he announced that he hated his name of Andrew Dumas and would never answer to either name ever again. He would only answer to the name of "D"...and he stuck to that so the family used the name "Dee" from then on.
[Actually Dee was named after both of his Grandfathers, Andrew Jackson Adair and David Dumas Cleveland. Apparently this idea of changing the name must have come from the Cleveland side of the family because Grandmother Adair (Margaret Frances Cleveland) had a brother 2 years younger who was named David Quinn Cleveland. When he was a small boy he said that from then on his middle initial would be "W" because he could not make a "Q"...and that stood that way all his life.]
My Dad could not serve in WWI because he had very weak eyes but his brother Dee was determined to join the Army so he ran away from home at the age of 16 and signed up and was sent to San Antonio for training. It just so happened that one of his officers knew Granddaddy when they were boys in Hays Co. and he recognized Dee's name (I've no idea if he used his birth name or maybe had to give his parents name, just don't know}. I do know that this officer contacted Granddaddy and asked for proof of Dee's age...of course he was too young so Dee was discharged & sent home a very angry young man. Dee died of a heart attack in 1942, the lst child to die.

Mrs. Nettie (Dee) Adair, 102, died December 31, 1997, In Pasadena, Texas. She was born on December 22, 1895, in Elgin, Texas, to Charles and Minnie Davenport.
After attending, the Teacher's College in San Marcos, Texas, she taught in several Texas schools. She married Dee Adair in Bishop, Texas, in December of 1922. In 1937, the family moved to Lexington, Texas, where she lived most of the time until 1989, at which time she moved to Pasadena, Texas. She was a faithful member of the Baptist church, and enjoyed teaching ladies' classes in Sunday School for many years. She had an outgoing personality, and loved being with other people.
She was prededed in death by her husband in 1942; by her parents; by two brothers, Woody and Wayne Davenport; and by two sisters, May Davenport and Camilla Dalton, all of Elgin, Texas.
She is survived by her son and wife, Charles E. and Phyllis Adair; her grandson, Danny and Becky Adair, a great-grandson, Matthew Adair, a great-granddaughter, Teresa Espinoza; and a great-great-grandson, Joseph Wood, all of Pasadena. Also surviving her are three sisters-in-law, Mary Emma Davenport, Lois Adair, and Doris Baxter; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church, Lexington, Texas, at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 3, 1998, with Reverend Ruell Cooper officiating.
