He was the Bandy Distinguished Professor of Preaching and New Testament Emeritus at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University (Atlanta, GA). Prior to that position, he was a professor at Phillips University (Enid, OK). He was an ordained minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) from rural Tennessee. He was the founder and director of the Craddock Center in Cherry Log, GA, a non-profit service group which operates in rural Appalachia. He received his undergraduate degree from Johnson Bible College (Knoxville, TN), his seminary degree from Phillips University and a Doctor of Theology degree from Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN). He was a member of Cherry Log Christian Church. He was the author of several books including "As One Without Authority" and "Overhearing the Gospel." Over the years, he contributed articles to various journals. Much sought after lecturer, he delivered the Lyman Beecher Lectures at Yale, the Adams Lectures at Southeastern Baptist Seminary, the Sprinkle Lectures as Barton College, and he appeared as the key speaker and guest preacher at many schools and churches around the world. Considered by many to be the foremost preacher of his generation, he was a master homiletician and teacher. He was the son of the late Fred Brenning Craddock, Sr., and Ethel Marie Hood Craddock. He was survived by his wife, Nettie Dungan Craddock (married nearly 65 years); son, John Brenning Craddock (Dee); daughter, Laura Lee McMahan (Greg); brother, John Alvin Craddock; sister-in-law, Chloe Craddock; grandchildren, Nathan McMahan, Gavin McMahan, Shane Reis and Kristin Lewis; great-grandchildren, Caleb Reis, Kaitlyn Reis, Landan Reis and Logan Brenning Lewis; and an extended family of relatives, friends and former students. His funeral was held at Cherry Log Christian Church in Cherry Log, GA, on March 9, 2015, with The Rev. Dr. Thomas Long officiating. Music was by Richard Lumpkin. Pallbearers were Nathan McMahan, Gavin McMahan, Shane Reis, Caleb Reis and Brett Lewis.1420
