In the biography of William W. Jones in Goodspeed's History of Daviess County, it is stated that William fought with the 44th at Cedar Mountain and that a brother was shot in the battle and died of wounds there. According to Fulkerson, History of Daviess County, Company E of the 27th Regiment was organized at Washington in July 1861 and fought at Cedar Mountain. Among the casualties was John Jones, who "died of wounds at Alexandria, Virginia in 1862."
