Notes for William Jones
The following analysis, which establishes that William Jones died before the age of 6, was supplied by Gilbert X. Drendel.1529 The census date for 1790 was August 2, the first Monday in August. As of that date the first five children (of Ebenezer and Mary Jones) had been born. They were all boys:

1. William born June 10, 1784
2. Enoch born October 23, 1785
3. Smith born November 13, 1786
4. Vance born April 23, 1788
5. Lewis born June 23, 1790

The census report of the Ebenezer Jones family, recorded in August 1790, listed one male over age sixteen (Ebenezer) and four males under sixteen. We have firm proof that Enoch, Smith, Vance and Lewis lived to adulthood. so these were the four males under sixteen in Mary and Ebenezer’ household in August 1790. The missing child had to be William, who must have died before that time.

Further evidence that William died as a child is found in the 1881 obituary of Jincy Owens Jones Garten, which read in part:

“Sister Garten was the youngest of a family of fifteen children, nine brothers and six sisters, two sisters still living, one 95 (?) years old. One of her brothers was killed by the Indians in 1812, in his 19th year; two brothers were preachers in the M.E. church; two were physicians.  Fourteen of them lived to be about grown; thirteen of them all grown men and women were all present at church with their father and mother at one time. She was the mother of ten children; three died quite young, seven still live, six sons and one daughter; five sons live in Kansas; one son and one daughter in Indiana. Five of her sons were in the Union army and one in the Confederate, all returning home at the close of the war and all are still living.”

It is likely that this story had been told by Jincy herself to one of her children, who helped write the obituary. Presumably, she said "about grown" because Jesse died at the age of 19 and he was presumably the one who was not at church on that memorable day. This is strong indication that William died young, since there is strong evidence of all of the others becoming adults.

For a complete discussion of Ebenezer’s fifteen children and further proof that the William Jones who married Polly Johnson and migrated from South Carolina to Daviess Co IN was not Ebenezer’s son, see the excellent biography of Ebenezer Jones by Gilbert X. Drendel.369
