On May 31, 1734 James Roberts of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County, purchased 400 acres of land on Deep Creek in Goochland County, Virginia, some miles west of Richmond (Will and Deed Book I, p. 500), but it appears that James continued living in New Kent County. However, his son, William, lived in Goochland County during the 1740's.
485One researcher, Doug Roberts, has said that James Roberts lived in New Kent Co VA from the early 1720s until the mid 1750s.
927 His wife
may have been Margaret Dudley, of Essex Co VA.
1814 He had the following reasonably well documented children:
William
Richard
Frances
James Jr.; m (1) 1750 Susanna Ellis, m (2) 1760 Elizabeth Oakes
In November 2011, Mr. Roberts sent the following summary of his research on the Roberts family:
“James Roberts lived in Yorktown from at least 1707 and was probably there a few years earlier. He was associated with one John Roberts whom I take to have been his brother. Both men applied to the county court for licenses to operate ordinaries. By 1723 James Roberts and wife Margaret were living in New Kent Co. Their known children were William, Frances and James, Jr. A probable son was Richard Roberts who settled in Henry Co near the Rockingham Co NC line. About 1740 William Roberts moved to land south of the James River which his father had bought in 1734 in what was then apparently Goochland Co. By 1748 or so he seems to have joined by his younger brother James. By 1755 James, William and James, Jr. were all living in present-day Lunenburg. They all moved to Halifax around 1760 where William Roberts operated a ferry across the Dan River near the mouth of the Hyco River.”
Mr. Roberts has deduced the probable name of James Roberts’ wife as follows:
“James Roberts, Jr. had six if not seven or more sons, one of whom he named Cyrus Lightfoot Roberts and another who he named James Dudley Roberts. I searched for either a Margaret Lightfoot or a Margaret Dudley. I found a Margaret Dudley in Essex Co VA who in 1716 was named in the will of her father Richard as a minor but who witnessed a will in her own right in 1717. There was too a William Roberts living in Essex Co who may have been the father of James Roberts. His wife's name was Jane. In 1705 one Jane Roberts and one Elizabeth Dudley, the wife of Richard Dudley, were transported to Virginia for land received by a gentleman in Essex Co. They seemed to have visited England and then returned to Virginia. The father of this William Roberts was an Edmund Roberts who was living in Gloucester Co by 1690 and bought land in and moved to Essex Co in 1695.”
