Notes for John Thomas Hathcock
JOHN THOMAS HATHCOCK108

John Thomas Hathcock was born 3 October 1838 in Haywood County, Tennessee, the oldest child of Peyton and Ann Newman Hathcock. He was married before 1860 to Mary Frances Hood, daughter of Henry and Mary Ann Humphreys Hood. Mary Frances Hood was the stepsister of John Thomas Hathcock, her mother having married Peyton Hathcock after the death of Henry W. Hood.

On 20 September 1861, John T. Hathcock enlisted in the Confederate Army, in the 31st Tennessee Infantry. He fought in the battles of Perryville, Kentucky, Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge. He was captured in Hardeman County, Tennessee while on a furlough. He was imprisoned by the Federal Army until 1 January 1865 when he was exchanged. After the war he and his family lived again in Haywood county in District #5 and in District #8. The 1870 census lists him and his wife and four children.

In 1880, the family was living in Shelby County, Tennessee. In November 1905 he was living in Tipton county, when he made application for a pension for his service in the Civil War. He stated that he and his wife were living with his 32 year old son. His wife was 50 years old at that time so she must have been a second wife. John T. Hathcock died in 1907 and is buried at Covington, Tipton county, Tennessee. One of his descendents, Hugh Dawson, has kindly furnished me with a good record of the descendents of John Thomas Hathcock. Information furnished by Hugh and from various census records show that he had 5 children, W. H., James Peyton, John Thomas Jr., Richard Edward and Charles.

**NOTE ADDED BY CLAYTON HEATHCOCK, 27 JAN 2017

His name may have been John Thurman Hathcock instead of John Thomas Hathcock. On his Tennessee death certificate, the middle name looks more like “Thurman” than “Thomas” and it was indexed as John Thurman Hathcock (see death certificate in his multimedia file).
