This listing is for dwelling 1317. The listing for Elias King, presumed father, is dwelling 1315. The dwelling between, #1316, is Saml Wallace, overseer (presumably for the Elias King estate, which was quite large).
On the
1860 Slave Schedule for Haywood Co TN, Dist 8, S. S. King is reported to have owned 9 slaves.
Family legend, or oral tradition, held that SS died toward the end of the Civil War. He had gone to the North to obtain federal money to pay taxes on his farm to the federal government (he'd paid taxes to the Confederacy and was in danger of losing his land) and got killed trying to cross back into Southern territory. I'm pretty sure he's buried in Trinity Cemetery in Nutbush, Tennessee.
2011The foregoing speculation about his burial place has been confirmed.
2013The 1850 census listing for Elias King includes a 17-year old son recorded (clearly) as Stephen S. King. This listing may well be for Swepson, which is a sufficiently unusual name that it might have been recorded as Stephen by the census taker. See full family listing on Notes for Elias King Sr.
