Notes for Joseph Huff
Joseph Huff.

The subject of this sketch was born In Sevier county, Tenn., Nov. 28, 1838, and came with his parents, Wm. and Mary Huff, to Missouri in 1841, and settled near Ironton. He was married to Miss Martha J. Mayfield, Nov. 15, 1866. To this union four children were born: Arthur, Estelle, Benton and Birdie, all of whom survive, except the last named. His wife only lived a few years, having died in tbe year 1875 (May 25th).

Mr. Huff was an officer in Iron county the most of his life, and was connected with the Circuit Clerk's office, either as clerk or deputy for almost forty years. He was an efficient officer and had many frlonds. He was honorable In his dealings with his fellows, the writer having heard from different ones the expression, "We do not know of, and have never heard of his ever wronging any one." He was kind in disposition, generous; in fact a man of many excellent qualities, and as has been remarked to the writer by many, "He was worse to himself than to any one else."

He was a faithful member of the Masonic Fraternity, the principles of which he loved, and was held in esteem by the members of his home lodge, as was demonstrated at his funeral which was conducted by them. He had his faults and who has them not.

The writer had the privilege of visiting him many times during his last Illness, and to be suffering as be was, he manifested great patience, and was most of the time cheerful. He left the assurance to his children and others that he would meet his Heavenly Father in peace. He passed away without a struggle, at 11 o'clock p. m., Jan. 3, 1903. The end was one of peace.

The funeral service was conducted by the writer at Fort Hill church. He was laid to rest in the beautiful Masonic and Odd Fellows' cemetery, there to await the resurrection. Peace to his ashes! To the bereaved, the 121st Psalm.
