There was a French family in Newfoundland in the 1600s. The family name is found on French’s Cove, named after the Edward French family who claimed land here going back to 1634.2806 Many of the French males were named William or Edward:

William French, son of Edward French, whose 4 Aug 1839 will mentions his son William. It also mentions that his father was William French.
William John French, son of John French, b Sep 1829, m Elizabeth Snow.
The only one of these who might be the William French who married Jane Caldwell would appear to be the son of Edward French, who died in 1839.
