Notes for William (Spouse 1)
William’s actual surname is lost. When he came to the US, he had a very strong accent and the iindividual who processed his immigration could not understand his name, so he assigned him the surname “Bates”. He abandoned his wife and daughter after two years and returned to Scotland, whereupon Jessie met and married Edward Brown.
2868A William Bates arrived at Ellis Island from Glasgow on a ship named Lapland, March 27, 1918. He was 26 years old, 5-2 and 140 pounds. There is no definitive proof that this was the right William Bates of the many William Bates who appear on passenger lists for that general time period.
Since Madeline was born in Buffalo in 1924, William’s return to Scotland would have been around 1926.
