“Charles Ellis, son of the immigrant, married 1719-20, Susannah Harding, removing about 1754, to Amherst, at that time Albemarle county, calling his place "Red Hill." One of their sons was Josiah, born 1746, married 1766, Jane Shelton, daughter of Richard, son of the original Ralph. It is said of this couple by a writer of that time, "They had twelve goodly children, six of whom had black eyes and six blue." One of these was Nancy, my grandmother, born 1770, married 1793, Robert Hunter, planter, for in all this time the Hunters were enlarging their borders, marrying and founding families as well as homes, of their own.”1256
