Leonard Carter has been tested for Y-DNA profile and found to have the Hathcock modal. See http://heathcock.org/genealogy/dna.html. We have not yet come up with a hypothesis of when and where his Carter surname became associated with the Hathcock Y-DNA haplotype. It was presumably a non-paternal event that occurred, most likely in North Carolina or Tennessee in the 1780-1850 time frame.
