According to the 1880 census, Bun Asberry was son of Manda McFarland. He appears as a 7-year old in the family of Alfred Hethcock in 1870. The most likely answer is that Amanda had the three children Bun, Alice and William out of wedlock and that their father was an as-yet unidentified Asbury. There is also evidence that Bun and his mother Amanda had a son who was named John M. Mcfarland (see death certificate attached to John M. Mcfarland page).
