John Milburn "Happy" Hathcock lived an extraordinary life -- humbly and modestly. Happy was born November 22, 1918 in Comanche, Texas. He was named "John" after his Grandfather King and nicknamed Happy after his Father James Frank "Happy" Hathcock. Happy's mother was Ada Francis (King) Hathcock. Happy married Jewel Heizer in Comanche and left the very next day for World War II duty. Happy had to say goodbye to Jewel, his one true love, way too soon on Jewel's 61st birthday on November 3, 1982 However, Jewel was never, ever far from his heart and Happy was always ready to profess his undying love for Jewel to all. He loved his family and friends deeply. He had strong convictions and stood his ground with thoughtful determination. His daughter, Ann Hathcock, was his pride and joy whom he adored beyond words. Ann has wonderful memories of her Dad throughout her life punctuated by his daily early a.m. telephone calls that kept them close when apart. Ann was extremely thankful that she was with her Dad constantly these last few months in Austin while he was trying to recuperate from a back injury. His spirit was so, so strong and his will and determination never ceased until the very end on Monday, April 22, 2013 at the age of 94. He was an inspiration to his friends and family through his never-ending thirst for knowledge, current events, healthy living, exercise and faith in God and mankind. He simply adored his grandchildren Gabrielle Adamo, Jon Michael Adamo and Huylar Lee IV. A head for business and independent self-sufficiency led Happy on a wonderful journey from early radio repairs to owning Hathcock's Furniture and Appliance Stores that kept Comanche County households furnished for over 60 years. Happy was quoted as saying "If I hadn't had great employees all these years, I wouldn't have had anything," His motto "See Happy and Be Happy" was known throughout the County. He received the Chamber of Commerce Businessman of the Year Award in 2004. Happy was also an accomplished pilot always generous with his time and energy to take novices on flights. He was part of the planning and construction of the Comanche Airport Happy had land and cattle and worked the same until well into his 80's. His heart was deeply rooted in his love for Comanche, Texas.3613
