COL CHARLES HAL JONES, JR.4426Col. Charles Hal Jones, Jr., 3204 Greenlawn Pkwy, Austin, died Saturday morning in the Veteran's Hospital of Houston following a recent illness.
Col. Jones was a graduate of Texas A and M with the class of 19Z5. He was commander of Company D of the 143rd Infantry Division of the Texas National Guard. During World War II, Col. Jones served as Battalion Commander of the 2nd Battalion of the 143rd Infantry in North Africa and Southern Italy. He was captured in Anzio, Italy, in 19-13 and was a prisoner of war in Posnan, Poland, Oflag along with many other Texas men. Following retirement, in 1960, Col. Jones resided in Austin with his wife Opal Aycock Jones.
He was preceded in death by his wife. Survivors are: his sister, Kathryn Jones Howard of Houston; his brother, Wm. D. C. Jones of Atlanta, Georgia; two sons, Charles Hal Jones III of Houston, Jon W. Jones of San Antonio and four grandchildren.
Services will be Tuesday at 9:30 A.M. at the Earthman Funeral Home, 6700 Harris Avenue, Houston (Bellaire). Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
