Notes for Vivian Aylene Kirkpatrick
Vivian Aylene (Kirkpatrick) Allison November 14, 1922 ~ January 17, 2020
On January 17, 2020, surrounded by her family, Vivian Allison, 97, went to be with the lord. Vivian was born the oldest of two children of Martin VanBuren Kirkpatrick and Jessie Lee Parker in Junction, Texas, on November 14, 1922. Vivian grew up on the North Llano River in Texas living next door to her future husband Arch Allison. She graduated from Junction High School in 1939, and married Arch Allison in 1942.
As a military wife, she saw her husband through World War II, and other conflicts during his tenure in the service. During Arch’s twenty-six years in the Air Force, Vivian moved with her husband and family thirteen times, including stays in Alaska and Okinawa, Japan. As a military mother, she experienced the fear associated with her son joining the Air Force during the Vietnam War. God blessed her and her family during these times and she always lived with a grateful heart.
After Arch’s retirement from the Air Force in 1966, they moved to their “forever” home in Arkansas, where she became a farm wife and ranch hand. Vivian and Arch worked many years side by side, feeding cows, birthing calves, training horses, mending fences and hauling hay.
Vivian was a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church and attended church there for over 40 years. She was a Christian woman that loved God and always did the right thing. She was a loving companion to Arch for 66 years. Vivian was a mother to three children, grandmother to six, and a great grandmother to eleven.
Vivian had a passion for gardening, canning, preserving and living off the land. She and her family lived through the Great Depression and then war time rationing. Her motto was use it up; wear it out, make it do, or do without. No one could get more uses from a single sheet of aluminum foil! She was a skilled seamstress. If she needed an outfit, she made it. She enjoyed quilting and put those skills to use as an active member of the Ratcliff Community Club. She was the club’s secretary for many years where she put her wordsmith abilities and organizational skills to use for the monthly newsletter and the club’s philanthropic endeavors.
She always maintained a Purple Martin birdhouse in her back yard and fussed at the sparrows for building nests and messing up her birdhouse. She detested woodpeckers as much as sparrows and may have removed one or two of them from her property over the years. Vivian loved Cardinals and would make sure they were fed during the winter along with the finches and “nasty sparrows”.
Vivian was preceded in death by her father, Martin Kirkpatrick, her mother, Jessie Lee Parker her brother, Martin Kirkpatrick, Junior and her husband, Arch Allison.
Vivian is survived by her son Rodney Allison and wife Patricia Allison of Round Rock, Texas her daughter, Nancy Foster and husband Don Foster of Ratcliff, Arkansas and her daughter Vicki Smithey and husband Tom Smithey of Flower Mound, Texas.
Vivian has six grandchildren; Chris Allison, Stephen Allison, Alena Pennington, Deanna White, Miranda Smithey and Jonathan Smithey. She is also survived by 11 great grandchildren; Austin Allison, Kayla Allison, Katarina Allison, Parker Allison, Skylar Allison, Carter Allison, Alec Pennington, Rylee Pennington, Courtney White, Allison White and Nathan White.
