Obituary—James L. Garten1679
James L. Garten was born in Gibson county, Ind., April 21, 1835, and was married to Olive A. Bauldwin, October 14, 1866. To this union were born two daughters and one son. The two daughters, Wilmina and Laura C., preceded him to the other world.
Comrade James L. Garten in response to Lincoln's first call for volunteers enlisted as private under Captain Jas. L. Cary, Company C, 1st Regiment of Indiana Cavalry Volunteers and was enrolled July 11, 1861, to serve three years or during the war. He was discharged August 20, 1864, at Indianapolis, Ind., having served almost thirty-eight months. As a private citizen Jas. L. Garten with his wife emigrated to Kansas In April, 1869, locating on a farm near Verdi in Ottawa county. In the spring of 1870 moved to his homestead in Dickinson county where he resided until he retired from active business life about 15 years ago, moving to his residence in Solomon where he departed from the cares of this world February 9, 1916, aged 80 years, 9 months and 18 days.
Mr. Garten in nearly life was a member of the Methodist church but after moving to this country never united with any church. Mr. Garten during bis later years was a diligent Bible reader and all through life was an ardent advocate of temperance and of all reforms for the betterment of humanity and of our nation. He leaves a wife, one son, Francis L. of Salina, also four brothers, one sister and other relatives and many friends to mourn hla death.
The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church in Solomon Friday, February 11, at 2:30, prayer service at the home preceding. Rev. Dr. Blayney of Abilene officiated.—Solomon Tribune.
