Notes for Mary Ann Cook
Mary Ann was not listed in the 1850 census. It appears that she and John must have divorced since she married Benjamin Bragg in December of 1850.
Notes for John (Spouse 1)
Will of John Heathcock, Jr. - Madison Co. AL Dated 1 August 1867 mentions the following children: Sons: Ferdinand Dodson and Nelson, Daughters: Hulda Fowler, Nancy Morgan, & Caledonia Davis.

Mary Ann Cook was John Hathcock’s step-sister: John Cook and Margaret Shackelford were the parents of Mary Ann Cook. After John died in 1822, Margaret married James Harrison in 1824, and after he died, she married John Hathcock Sr. in 1826. At that time, John Hathcock Jr. was about 11 and Mary Ann Cook was about 14, so the children were presumably raised together. They were married in 1834 when John was about 19 and Mary Ann was about 23.

The 1840 Census of Madison Co AL shows John Heathcock as head of household with the following enumeration:

Jno. Hathcock
1 male 20-30
1 female 20-30
1 female 50-60
3 males under 10

One of these males must have been Ferdinand Dodson, who was born about 1839. It is not kown who the other two were and they may have died between 1840 and 1850.

[The three males under 10 are in a column labelled “Free colored persons, Males, Under 10). However, it is my opinion that this column was instead intended to be a toral of all the people in the family. My reason for believing this is that all of the families enumerated on the page had a number in the same column, including one family with 12 in this column. This number does agree with the total of the numbers in the various age groups for free white males and females.]

The next door listing is the family of Mary Ann Cook’s brother, Isaac Cook.

Mary Ann was not listed in the 1850 census. It appears that she and John must have divorced since she married Benjamin Bragg in December of 1850.
