Notes for William Gant
Records indicate that William had no land of his own until 1816 when he received 600 acres bequeathed to him from his father. This land included the family home and the 25 acres surrounding it that his father bequeathed the use of to his half sister, Nancy, for her natural life or until her remarriage.330

Nancy died in 1816 shortly after the death of her father and the house and land she held apparently reverted to William who held the surrounding land.

William and Elizabeth moved to Gibson Co TN sometime between 1824 when their daughter, Martha J., was born in Franklin Co NC and 1830 when they appeared in the census of Gibson Co TN for that year.

The earliest deed found in Gibson Co TN concerned a sale by William GANT to William SEAL/SEAT on 1 Mar 1830. On 8 Jul 1843, he purchased land from W.B.G. Hollingsworth, and on 8 Jul 1843 be purchased more from William BRUER.

William began selling out in Gibson Co TN in anticipation of his move to Marshall Co MS when he sold part of his land to Bryant CAROWAY on 18 Jun 1844 and the remainder of his land on 6 Feb 1846.

On 15 Jul 1846, William sold four slaves to his son, William H. GANT, for $1,000 with $300 in cash and the remainder to extinguish his debts to William DURLEY and others.

On 22 Jul 1846, William sold four slaves his new wife had inherited from her deceased husband, Needham HOLLAND, to William B. BENION and Robert BILLINGSLEY.

By 1850, William was in the household of his son, William H. GANT, in Marshall Co MS where he died 29 Dec 1851.

Notes for Elizabeth (Spouse 1)
Following is footnote 25, page 414, of the Gant book:330

“Information from Lea L. Dowd, editor of the "Southern Bass Newsletter" indicates that the children of Josiah and Tabitha Thomas included an Elizabeth Thomas, born 9 Mar 1799 whose date of birth matches that of William Gant's wife, Elizabeth, as written in the family bible (see the note above). Other children of Josiah and Tabitha Thomas included Joseph John Thomas, born 1810 (apparently the man to whom William Gant and his wife, Elizabeth Thomas, sold her interest in her father's land for one dollar) and Nancy Tabitha Thomas, born 28 Apr 1803, who married Wyatt Bass.”

In addition see miscellaneous note attached to the page for Josiah Thomas for other arguments that Elizabeth Thomas was daughter of Josiah and Tabitha Thomas.
