Notes for Orrye A. Phillips
The name came to me from my mother, but she did not know any more except that names of the two sons. The unusual name is confirmed by the 1930 census, which names her as “Orrie”. In that census, it is reported that she was 49 (ten years older than her husband) and that she was 20 at the time of her first marriage, which would have been in 1901. Charles Gilbert (recorded in the 1930 census as C G Lay) was recorded as being 39 and 19 at the time of his first marriage, which would then have been 1910. Orrie was born in Texas, her father in Georgia, and her mother in Texas.
I have been unable to find any other records of Orrie. My mother told me that her name was Phillips but I don’t know if that was a maiden name or the name of her first husband. The two sons were born in Howard Co TX in 1911 and 1912, so they could well have been out of the home by the time of the 1930 census. I have not been able to find anyone in this family in the 1920 census.

She died in Dallas on 30 Nov 1947 and her death certificate indicated that she was a married housewife and lived at 906 N. Jester in Dallas. Information was provided by C. G. Lay. See multimedia for death certificate.

Charles Gilbert Lay lived in Big Spring, Howard Co TX and in the 1910 census, he is listed as a single lodger (Charlie Lay) in the home of Frank Stinson and his wife Ruth. At the time he was a painter and worked in a machine shop. This was a rooming house, as there were 16 lodgers, all men between 21 and 48. They all worked for the Rail Road.
Charles married Minnie Pike, who was born to Walter Pike and Sarah Fite on March 29, 1893 in Texas. The were apparently married in 1910, after the census had been taken. On 5 Aug 1911, Minnie had a premature son, who was stillborn. They had a second son, Charles Gilbert Lay Jr., on Oct 9, 1912 and then Minnie died just a few weeks later on Oct 31, 1912 in Big Springs, Howard, Texas. She was only 19 years, 7 months, and 3 days old. She was buried at Mt. Olive Cemetery, Big Springs, Howard Co, TX. Charles Gilbert Lay Jr. was raised by his grandmother, who later adopted him.
Charlie Gilbert Lay was a Sgt. in the U. S. Marine Corps in World War I.224 At the December 1917 Muster of the 61st Company, Marine Barracks, Navy Yard, New York, he was listed as a Private who enlisted 5 June 1917.228 On June 28, 1918, he was mentioned in the obituary of his brother, Francis Marion Lay, as being in the United States Marines in Quantico, Virginia.229 At the December 1918 Muster he is listed as a Sergeant with Company “I”, 13th Regiment, U. S. Marines, American Expeditionary Forces.228 The “Remarks column” has the notation “21 to 31 on Det-D at Coutras, Gironde.”
Widower Charles married Orrye (Orrie) Phillips, who had previously been married to Theodore D. Richards, in 1923 in Big Spring TX.

Lay was a business agent with a printer’s union and Orrie Lay was not working at the time of the census.
In the 1940 census of Dallas, Dallas Co TX, Charles and Orrie were listed along with nephew and niece James and Elaine Slay. It is indicated that James and Elaine Slay lived in Miller Co AR in 1935. Charles Gilbert was a painter working for a building contracter.

He died at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital and his body was removed for burial at Lavernia. His parents were given as Francis F. M. Lay and Nannie J. Weems (actually it was Green) and his profession was given as painter (actually it was printer). This information was incorrect in several aspects but it was apparently given by the Registra of the VAH, rather than by a family member.
