MOORELAND - Jesse Compton, 79, Mooreland died Saturday, December 2, 2006 at his residence following a brief illness.

He was born September 15, 1927 in Faubush, KY a son of the late Chester and Hattie (Wedd1e) Compton.

He was a machinist for Chrysler Corporation for over 32 years before retiring in 1987. He also cut and sold wood for many years as a side business.

He enjoyed hunting with his grandsons, watching NASCAR, football, and women's basketball.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren very much.

He is survived by his wife, Lois (Johnson) Compton whom he married on December 30, 1950; seven children, Barbara Slaven (companion: Richard Lyles) of Rushville, Maxine (husband: Wayne) Moss of Danville, VA, John (wife: Karen) Compton of Straughn, Judy (husband: Ross) Halstead, Diane (husband: Junior) Thompson, Tim Compton, and Janet Stearns all of Mooreland; 18 grandchildren, Sherry (husband: Brent) Hammond, Sally Burns, Jeffrey Compton, Jesse Compton, Julie (husband: Jay) Clapp, Craig (wife: Kim) Swo-veland, Kristi (husband: Jar-od) Mosier, Justin Stearns, Wendy Adkins, Josie Compton, Alicia (husband: Chris) Smoak, Keegan Compton, Angela Thompson, Jennifer Thompson, Doug Thompson, Jason (wife: Brandi) Burton, Cody (wife: Beth) Burton, and Valerie Atchley; 19 greatgrandchildren; two sisters, Lela Boone of Dearborn, MI and Christine (husband: John) Smith of Grand Prairie, TX; a brother, Wilford (wife: Helen) Compton of Hoopeston, IL; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a grandson, Brian Compton; three brothers, Arthur, Huey, and Willie Compton; and two sisters, Ann Brown and Beatrice Compton.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 6, 2006 in Sproles Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Thompson officiating.

Burial will follow in Mooreland Cemetery with military honors provided by a contingent from the American Legion and VFW.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
