The assignment of Instant Lay Sr. as the father of John Lay Jr. is circumstantial and is based on the following reasoning:
In the 1850 census of Pulaski Co KY, the families of John Lay Jr. and George Lay Jr. were enumerated as numbers 273 and 274, respectively, suggesting a family relationship.
There is good evidence that George Lay Jr. was the son of Instant Lay Sr. because one of the witnesses to Instant’s will was G. R. Lay, and in the 1880 census, Sarah Lay, age 77 and presumably the widow of Instant Lay Sr., was enumerated in the family of George Lay.
