Notes for George Hill
The following information is due to George Hill descendant E. Ray Hill:1869

Here is what I have as a preponderance of evidence that tends to prove the two George Hills, son of Nicholas Hill and George Hill of Beaufort Co., NC, are the same person:

1.  The George Hill of Isle of Wight Co., VA seemed to have disappeared from that county at a young age. The only record I find with his name is the 1677 Grievance filed March 5th in that county. After that, nothing.

2. By 1707 George Hill was was granted 900 ac. on SS of Pamlico River, Bath Co., NC (Beaufort formed 1712) - Hills Point, Pamlico River and Slades Creek.

3. George Hill of Isle of Wight Co., VA had a sister named Ann Bennett Hill, b/1655 IWCVA, d/1733 Beaufort Co., NC. Her first husband, Jacob Darden, died Jun 1719 IWCVA. Sometime after his death, she moved to Beaufort Co., NC and married James Leigh. Source: family  research of descendants of this family.

4.James Leigh was a planter, whose plantation was located on the south side of the Pamlico River between South Dividing Creek (now South Creek) and Leigh (Lee) Creek. In 1754 Durham (Dereham ?) Leigh conveys to John Tripp, Jr., for forty pounds, a tract of land lying on the S. Side of Pamlico River formerly belonging to James Leigh and by his will given to his son John Leigh and now in the possession of Durham Leigh, by estimation 100 acres.

5. In 1715, the "Corn List" for Beaufort and Hyde Precincts (NC) listed George Hill and "Mr. Leigh & Son" together under "Clarks List." This "Mr. Leigh" is assumed to have been James Leigh who married Ann Darden (widow), sister of George Hill.

6. In the 1717 will of Emanuel Cleaves of Bath Co., NC James Leigh, Esq. is shown as a "friend" in that will, and George Hill is listed as one of the witnesses. We can probably assume that Ann was married to James Leigh by this time.

7. George Hill's will (NC) shows a John Leath as a witness. This appears to be the son of James Leigh.

Summary:
Fact #1 - Research by descendants of Ann Bennett Hill appear to prove that she moved to Beaufort Co., NC and married James Leigh.
Fact #2 - Research by descendants of George Hill and Ann Bennett Hill prove they were siblings.
Fact #3 - Documents show that a George Hill and James Leigh lived in the same area of Beaufort Co., NC
Fact #4 - Two documents have both George Hill and James Leigh's name on them. James Leigh's son appears to be a witness in George Hill's will.
