Notes for William Ledbetter
III. Third Generation in Virginia, cont.817

6.823 William, b about 1668 or earlier in Charles City County d 1743 in Brunswick County. This probably was the William first mentioned 3 Feb 1691 where Captain John Taylor commenced suit against William who did not appear, as shown in Court Order Book Charles City County, p 388, Ann B. Peebles' unpublished Fragments; and 3 March 1791 William confessed judgment "for 2837 lbs. tobacco with cash and costs of execution, due by bill," as shown at p 391. In the same court 9 Nov 1694 Richard Bland, assignee of Thomas Swan, sued William (p 537) and 3 Dec 1794 William appeared in replevy of attachment, p 540.

9 Oct 1716 Randle Platt sued William but suit was dismissed for failure to prosecute, Prince George County Court Order Book, p 85. On 10 Nov 1719 in same court, p 294, Richard Bland sued William for debt and case was dismissed for failure to prosecute.

We cannot be positive whether the suits were against the same William. We place him here because he fits by date and place as a younger son of Henry, Senior, and because in the Bristol Register we find William and Rebecca had a daughter Mary b 28 Dec 1720. She, with her brother, can be traced later in the St. Andrews Parish Vestry, Brunswick County, as taking care of William and Sarah. There could be a William who married Rebecca and a different William who married Sarah but I conclude Rebecca was the mother of the children and after her death William m (2) Sarah.

We also list here other William Ledbetters whom we have been unable to trace and hence have not assigned an identification number to them:

8 Dec 1708 William Ledbeter will probated Somerset County, Maryland, beneficiaries Dorothy Earingron, Mary wife of Francis Hepth, "late master." This William is probably an entirely separate family from the Ledberters in Prince George County, Virginia.

March 1721-William Ledbetter deed to John Bowen, 610 acres south side Marattuck River, Chowan County, North Carolina, Chowan County, Register of Deeds, Book C No. 1. 2 July 1721 Wm Ledbetter witnessed sale at Edenton, North Carolina. Chowan County being very large and adjoining Brunswick County, this could be William b about 1696 in Charles City County, m Francis Vandiver about 1718 and was son of the original Francis Ledbetter.
