Notes for Hans George Mangold
Hans George Mangold (Apr 1907 - Oct 2001) - Born in Weinheim, Germany, the eldest of 7 (?) children, Hans always had an energetic spirit. Known for his fancy feet and zither-playing fingers, he would impress and delight everyone who knew him. He immigrated to the United States on his own at the tender age of 18 to live with his uncle and aunt in New York City. A few years later, he would move to San Antonio to expound on the upholstery skills he had learned from his Uncle George. In 1929, he married his one and only love, New Braunfels, TX native Ella Hoffman (1896 - 1988). Never officially retiring, Hans was able to run a successful upholstery business well into his eighties.1989

He came to America in 1923 at age 18 bringing his trade school upholstery skills and his zither to San Antonio, being sponsored by his Uncle George. He worked for City Upolstery during this time and later bought it in 1935. He was a member of the State Soccer Championship team and later was instrumental in bringing soccer to San Antonio. He was an avid tennis player, however, his most important contribution to the city was his love of music and his zither. He played almost everywhere performing especially during Fiesta week at the Beethoven Hall of which he was the second oldest member. He was a 75 year member of the Hermann Sons and worked at his trade until he was 90. He and his beloved bride, Ella, were both avid travelers.
