Notes for Samuel Wilburn Hathcock
Samuel Wilburn Hathcock2417

Samuel Wilburn Hathcock was born in Bibb County, Alabama, on 19 August 1824, apparently the first son of Flemon Hathcock. His mother's name is believed to have been Rachel and she probably died before 1841. His stepmother was probably Martha Lucinda of South Carolina. Flemon Hathcock and his family appear in the 1830 and 1840 Census of Bibb County. The 1830 and 1840 censuses do not indicate the names of the family except for the head of the household. The 1820 Census of Bibb County has been lost or destroyed. In the 1830 Census of Bibb County, the male child between 5 and 10 years of age is probably Samuel Wilburn. The younger male child is probably his brother, John Franklin.

Samuel Wilburn grew up in the vicinity of Bibbville and Vance, in the northwest corner of Bibb County near the Tuscaloosa County border. When he was about twenty-two years of age, he moved to Monroe County, Mississippi. His parents remained in Bibb County until about 1857 and then moved to Tuscaloosa County. In 1847, Samuel Wilburn moved to Mississippi with who may have been his aunt and uncle, Thomas and Martha E. Hathcock. He settled in the community of Hatley, Mississippi, in northeast Monroe County. There he met and married Arvyzenia Sullivan, who is believed to have been the daughter of Elisha Sullivan, an ordained minister of the New Hope Baptist Church near Hatley. Samuel Wilburn and Arvyzenia married 6 August 1847. They were married by E. Sullivan, who is believed to have been her father. The marriage records indicate that their bondsman was Coleman Baldwin. Their first child, William F., was born 17 December 1848 in Monroe County, Mississippi. The family then moved back to Bibb County between 1849 and early 1850 and resided next door to Samuel Wilburn's parents, Flemon and Martha Hathcock.

Samuel Wilburn Hathcock is buried in the old section of the New Hope Cemetery at Hatley, Monroe County, Mississippi. He is buried near his son William F., his brothers, John Franklin and Flemon Jackson, his sister Louisa Hathcock Edwards, and next to his wife Arvyzenia. The marker of his grave was destroyed sometime in the past but was replaced in 196B.

Samuel Wilburn's great granddaughter, Mrs. Sena Black of Amory, Mississippi, mentions that he was buried in his Confederate uniform and was the coroner of Monroe County at one time. His grandson, Mr. Grover C. Hathcock of Amory, recalls from family discussions that Samuel Wilburn had two bachelor uncles who owned and operated a blacksmith shop near the waterfront in Memphis, Tennessee. As he recalls the story, one of these two men died and left Samuel Wilburn an inheritance. Samuel Wilburn attempted the journey to Memphis to look into the matter, but returned without having completed the journey.
