Notes for David Hathcock
DAVID HATHCOCK2441

David Hathcock, born about 1775, was the son of Mary Heathcock of Brunswick County (Later Greensville), Virginia. The name of his father is unknown but his grandfather was Joseph Heathcock of Brunswick County who died there in 1782 or 1783. The first mention of David in the old records is in the Last Will and Testament of his grandfather, Joseph Heathcock.

Joseph devised David one hundred acres of land in Greensville County, a part of Joseph's plantation. Joseph devised thirty-five acres of adjacent land to his granddaughter Elizabeth, who is believed to have been David's sister. Joseph bequeathed a bed and furniture to Howell Heathcock, who is believed to have been David's older brother. This Will was probated 26 April 1784 and at that time David was a minor less and than twenty-one years of age. He must have still been a minor on 24 October 1788 (Greensville County Order Book1m page 389), for on that date David made Jeremiah Heathcock his guardian to rent out David 's land and maintain him from the profits of the rent. David must have become of age by 28 October 1796, for on that day he sold this land to his Uncle Charles Heathcock of Greensville County. If David would have been twenty-one years of age in 1796, then he would have been born about 1775 and in 1788 he would have still been a minor at the age of thirteen. It is thereĀfore assumed that he was born about 1775 in Old Brunswick County, Virginia.

D. Hathcock, who was probably David, appears on the census record of Orange County of 1810 along with an M. Heathcock, who was probably Merrit, and a John and a Jacob Hathcock. A Jacob Heathcock married a Nancy Heathcock in Orange County 13 September 1836. John, the son of David Heathcock married Jane Stewart in Greensville County 25 February 1811 when he was 21 years of age. The records imply that David moved to Orange County, North Carolina about 1800 from Greensville County, Virginia. Howell Heathcock and Holiday Heathcock appear in the Orange County census of 1800, living near each other.

On 18 April 1813, a David Hathcock married Peggy Mitchell in Orange County. David Hathcock purchased 105-1/2 acres of land "on the Great Road” from William Morris in Orange County in December of 1812. The purchase price was $100.00. David was then living in Orange County.

During this period, an Edward and a Lucy Heathcock were living in Orange County. David and his family appear on the 1820 census of Orange County with David listed as being 45 years of age or over. His wife is listed as being 26 to 45 years of age. At some distance from David lived a Nancy Heathcock at age over 45 years.

In 1830, David and an Edward appear on the census living next to each other. David does not appear on the 1840 census and it is presumed that he died between 1830 and 1840. In 1850, a Merrit Harthcock appears in the census as a Mulatto born in Orarge County about 1810. He had married Candice Archer. In August of 1786, the Court of Halifax County ordered that Nancy Heathcock, a base born child, be bound out to Joseph Wenter until she arrived at lawfulage. Joseph Wenter is found on a 2 January 1786 tax list of Halifax County living near Young and John Heathcock. At the same time, the Halifax Court ordered that David Hathcock and James Wooten, base born children, be bound to Nathaniel Glover until they arrived at lawful age. Also, a David Hathcock, base born child, age nine years, was bound out to Augustean Parrott to learn the art of tayloring. Augustean Parrott is found on the Halifax County Tax List of 14 February 1786, living near Isham and Edward Heathcock.
