There was a French family in Newfoundland in the 1600s. The family name is found on French’s Cove, named after the Edward French family who claimed land here going back to 1634.2629 Many of the French males were named William or Edward:

William French, b 1709 is listed in the microfilm copy of the Edward French Shipping Co. log.
William French, b 1753 is listed in the microfilm copy of the Edward French Shipping Co. log.
William French, b 14 Aug 1768 to Edward and Elizabeth French, date listed on his father’s Shipping Co. log.
William French, b. ca. 1810, d. ca. 1870, m. Penny (Penelope), in Bareneed, Newfoundland
William French, son of Edward French, whose 4 Aug 1839 will mentions his son William. It also mentions that his father was William French.
William John French, son of John French, b Sep 1829, m Elizabeth Snow.

The only one of these who might be the William French who married Jane Caldwell would appear to be the son of Edward French, who died in 1839.
