Notes for Robert George Gilchrist
Following from “Roger’s Genealogy”:138

Robert's true parents were Albert George Jacques and Elizabeth Ann Adams. Elizabeth was a widow at the time of her marriage to Albert, and had been previously married to John Chesterman., of the family after whom the Chesterman Beach in Tofino is named. She had a son by this marriage named John Filip Chesterman, born 13 August 1901. No other data on this son is available.

After Elizabeth Ann died , Albert wanted to put Robert into the Loyal Protestant Orphanage in Victoria as he felt that he could not take care of him.The Gilchrists stepped in and adopted Robert. Soon after William Law Gilchrist's death in 1923 and Amy Gilchrist's marriage to Alexander Moffat in 1925, Amy Jacques and Robert Gilchrist moved in with the Moffats. Robert left to join the Royal Canadian Navy as an Engine Room Artificer during WW II, and he married before 1945. Amy Jacques remained with the Moffats until her death in 1953. (See notes for William Gilchrist and Amy Jacques.)

Each year during the 1930's and early 1940's, at Christmas, there were two bachelor relatives of Amy Gilchrist's who came for Christmas dinner at the Moffats' home in Victoria.. One was Billy Thomson, Amy's cousin. The other was known to us children as "Uncle Bertie". Was this really Amy's uncle, and Robert Gilchrist's father, Albert George Jacques? I believe it was. He and Grandmother Gilchrist would go to her room and spend an hour or so talking. Billy Thomson never did the same. Uncle Bertie stopped coming early in the World War II days, which would coincide with Albert George Jacques' death in 1942.
