Notes for James A. McKenzie
'Hot' Wire Kills One, Burns Mate3185

Electrocution of James A. McKenzie, 18, of Los Padillos, and the serious injury by electrical burns of Ira Jack Baker, 48, formerly of Terra Haute, Ind, on a construction project east of Sandia Base here Tuesday night was reported Wednesday by Army authorities. District attorney M. Ralph Brown conducted an inquest despite some protest from those who held that the accident occured on a Federal Reservation outside state jurisdiction. Testimony at the inquest was that McKenzie and Baker, employed by Peter Kicwit (sp?) Sons Co., contractors were walking about 11 p.m. beside a truck which had no lights and were steadying the load. A boom on a crane attached to the truck, it was testified, came into contact with a 7200-volt power line, electrocuting McKenzie and burning Baker. Men who place McKenzie in a vehicle taken to St. Joseph's Hospital stated they believed he had a pulse at that time. McKenzie was pronounced dead on arrival. Condition of Baker was reported as "fair" at St. Joseph's Hospital Wednesday night. McKenzie, a lifelong resident here, is survived by his mother Mrs Mary McKenzie; a brother, Charles E.; his uncle, E.W . McKenzie, all of Albuquerque; and a sister, Flora McKenzie, San Antonio, TX."
