This is taken from a hand written family history by Melle (Worthen) Davis and typed much later by her daughter L. Jean Patterson

Thomas Keene, father of Susanna Keene, who married John Garner was born in England in 1593 according to a deposition which he made in 1648 in which he stated he was 55 years old. He may have been the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Gosnold) Keene of Suffolk, England. We first find Thomas Keene living on Kent Island: This Island which lies just off the coast of Maryland in Chesapeake Bay was first colonized in 1631 when Col. William Clayborne of Va. led a band of about 100 colonists there and established a trading post.

Thomas Keene may have been one of the original settlers of Kent Island who went there with Col. Clayborne in 1631. If he did leave for a while on St. Mary’s he later returned to Kent Island hwere on 9 Nov. 1640 he patented 100 acres of land in Hog Pen Neck lying between Thicketty Creek on the North and Hog Pen Creek and Chesapeake Bay on the West. We know his eldest son was born on Kent Island in 1642.

Thomas Keene had moved to Cherry Point Northumberland Co. Va. by 9 Dec 1650 on which date he and William Presley appraised an estate. On 13 Apr 1652, an oath of allegiance to England was taken by a number of Northumberland colonists. “Those names here subscribed do promise and engage ourselves to be bound and faithfully to the commonwealth of England as it is now without King or House of Lords” among other signers was Thomas Keene.

On 13 Oct 1653, we found recorded “Know we that I, the said Richard Bennett Esq. Gov. give and grant unto Thomas Keene 527 acres of land Scituate lying and being in the county of Northumberland and abouthing (may be abutting) Northwest upon the Severall Lands of Ralph Horsley and the said land due unto Thomas Keene by and for the transportation of 11 persons into the colony to have and to hold.

Thomas Keene was a cooper and possibly a merchant as well as a planter as shown by his will evidenced in Maryland Arch. (B5 P.183). His will was dated 27 Nov. 1652 and Pro. 20 Jan 1652, “I give my son Thomas one cow named Cole, next to my daughter Susanna 1 heffer called Sue, next my son William 1 heffer named Gentle, next my son Mathew the next calf that falleth of the old cows. To my wife Mary for bringing up my children all my movable goods hogs and cattle but what I have given to my children also the land and plantation to my wife during her life. “

Thomas Keene married Mary Thorley. The will of Edward Thorley of Ann Arundel Co., Maryland dated Dec. 1678, pro. 10 Fe 1678-9 “To my 3 sons Edward, John and Samuel Parcell’s chance in Talbot Co. to be equally divided to all of my children to my daughters to my cousin Thomas Keene personly. The executor was his wife Mary. Talbot Co. lies just South of Kent Island and Ann Arundel across Chesapeake Bay from it on West.

Thomas Keene probably married his wife in Maryland as their first son was born on Kent Island in 1642. She may have been a sister of Edward Thorley and her son Thomas the cousin he mentioned. Nieces and nephews were called cousins at that time.
