1507 Richard is admitted to the freedom of the Mercers' Company being then of age (21) He lived mostly in London

1511Within five years he was buying and selling on his own, He loaned money to King Henry VIII He is now 26

1514 In November of this year, he and William Copeland, mercharnt, received 33L from Henry VIII for the hireof their ship 'THE ANNE OF LONDON' This ship. sailed the North Sea, trading with Prussia.

1515 Richard hired extra vessels from the crown. It appears that Richard and the King were on good terms.

1515 Audrey Lynn may have become his wife this year. She was the daughter of William Lynn of Southwick.

1516 Henry appointed Richard a gentleman-usher extrodinary in the royal household. A daughter is born her name s Margaret. Richard is about 31 years old atthis time.

1518 Richard's son John is born Richard is 33

1519 Another son, Thomas is born. This Thomas will prove to be the most illustrous of all the Greshams. Not only will he found The Royal exchange, he will establish Gresham College which still operates in the City of London..

1520 A daughter, Elizabeth is born

1520 14 Oct, the next mention of Richard occurs some four years later when he is 35. He wrote to the Cardinal Wolsey telling him of the workmen he had hired to make tapestries for the walls of the Cardinal's pala ce Hampton Court was the name of this palace.

1521 11 Jan Richard asked the Cardinal to obtain a license to import and export goods. In exchange he offered to cancel a debt of 280L the Cardinal owed to him.

1523 Son William is born

1525 A daughter is born.

1525 Richard was nearly expelled from the City. The common council was upset with Cardinal Wolsey. Richard spoke on his behalf. The others were not amused.

1526 The brothers Richard. William and John are arrested at Nieuport. Richard is 41 years old They are soon released.

1528 A 43 year old Richard obtains monies from the royal treasury for 10 pieces of arras wrought with gold telling the story of David. He was acting for the crown while in Europe. It is not known if he held an offical post.However he wrote frequentlly to Wolsey and later to Crowmwell indicating some sort of sesrvice.

1530 Cardinal Wolsey dies. Richard pays for his funeral. Richard is 45 years old.

1531 This date is given for the knighting of Richard (GAWYSI Vol 11 #3 page 89) The DICTIONARY OF NATIONAL BIOGRAPHY as quoted in GAWYSI Vol 7 #3 p80 gives 18 Oct 1537 as date for knighthood.

1531 Richard is now elected Sheriff of London and middlesex. His collgue is Edward Althae.

1531 20 Dec Richard carries out the sentence of death for William Tewkesbury, heretic. William was burned at the at the stake.

1532 The king gave Richard a new year's gift of a gilt cup and cover. (In these days wealth was amassed in gold chains and plate. His wife and a sonare very ill this year. Richard is 47 years old.

1534 30 Apr Richard carries out the sentence of death for James Bainham. James was burned at the stake as an heretic. (Henry VIII's reign 1507-47 is caught up in severing the country from Rome. It didn't pay to disagree with the king. It could get prettyhot for you if you did.)

1536 19 May On this day Anne Boleyn was beheaded at the Tower of London. Richard and two other London merchants were engaged by Sir William Kingston to clear the tower of all strangers. Anne owed monies to Richard.

1537 Michaelmas Day 29 Sept Richard is elected Lord Mayor of London. London was that part of this area that was known as the City. Greater London consisted of a number of towns surrounding the City. Westminster where the King lived was a seperate town.

1544 Last known mention of Sir Richard. Secretary Pagent lists Richard as one of the English merchants whose goods were seized by Charles V.

SUMMARY
Robert received the honor of knighthood from Henry VIII from wwhom he received five grants of church lands and was employed by the King to negotiate for the government many loans from the bankers of Antwerp and Amsterdam. He was first a successful mercer at Holt, became sheriff, then was elected Lord Mayor of London. He finally became an eminent importer of fine merchandise and was in high favor with Henry VII during his reign. He married Audrey Lynne by whom he had three children John, Thomas, and Margaret.

THE TRIVETT FAMILY HISTORY 1040 - 2000 COPYRIGHT c 1996-2002 John E. Trivett Stogursey Castle was built at a later date as a fortress. Well worth a visit. It was in disrepute in 1216 and King John ordered its destruction. In 1537 Stogursey lands passed by gift to the crown. Then granted to a Richard Gresham, then Henry Courtenay , Marquis of Exeter who was disgraced in 1538. Then it was granted to Queen Catherine Howard in 1541, Henry VIII's wife and later to Queen Catherine Parr until her death in 1548. The castle was then called Wyndeats.
