The assignment of Henry Hathcock as a son of Charles Hathcock Sr. is speculative and based only on circumstantial evidence:
1. Henry Hathcock lived in Lincoln Co TN when he married Martha Mitchell there in 1845.
2. The 1850 Lincoln Co census showed Charles Hathcock Sr. with a family that included four sons, but only one over 20 years of age; another was listed as 19 in the 1850 census. Another son, Charles Hathcock Jr., lived next door.
3. In the 1830 census (Tuscaloosa Co AL), Charles Hathcock was listed with 3 sons 0-5 and two sons 10-15. Therefore, there were several sons of Charles Hathcock Sr. not accounted for in his listing in the 1850 census and one of these could well have been the Henry Hathcock who married Martha Mitchell in Lincoln Co in 1845.
4. The Henry Hathcock who was listed in Hardin Co TN, with wife Martha and father-in-law Henry D. Mitchell must be the same one who married Martha Mitchell in Lincoln Co in 1845. This family moved back from Hardin Co TN to Lincoln Co TN and were listed there in 1880. Hardin and Lincoln Counties were close, both on the Southern border of Tennessee.

Note that William J. Hathcock and his wife Martha named their first daughter Martha, perhaps in honor of her mother and grandmother, William’s biological mother Martha Mitchell Hathcock. The second daughter was named Sarah, perhaps in honor of William’s step-mother Sarah Arnold Hathcock.
