Notes for Maude Lavera (Spouse 1)
Maud Lavera Garten was born at Princeton, Indiana on Jan. 31, 1876. and departed this life at her home May 2, 1950 at the age of 74 years, 3 months and 2 days.

She was the daughter of William and Comfort Garten, and at the age of three years she came with her parents and the family to Bennington, Kansas where she grew to womanhood, and at an early age united with the Methodist church there.

On October 16, 1901 at the parental home she was united in marriage with Alexander C. Smith, and they came to make their home near Delphos, Kansas. To this union three sons were born: Gerold Anthony of Garden City; Aaron Clyde of Sublette, and Louis Burton of Delphos.

She transferred her church membership to the Presbyterian church at Delphos with her husband and sons a number of years ago and had continued to make that her church home.

Besides her husband and three sons, she leaves to mourn her passing, one sister, Mrs. Ada Klippert of Cabazon, Calif.; three brothers, John Garten of Portalas, N. Mex., Oscar and Reed Garten, both of Plains, Kans.; four grandsons and one granddaughter and numerous other relatives and many friends.

Her love for flowers and her devotion to her family and grandchildren were outstanding in her life and for them she delighted to spend her limited strength. She was ever a faithful and loving wife and mother, a loyal friend and a good neighbor who will be greatly missed.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon May 6 at the Presbyterian church in Delphos, Rev. W. Clyde Wolfe officiating.

Burial was in Delphos cemetery.
