The Phoebe Ann Downey who married James Hamilton in Marengo Co AL in 1846 would have been 47 in 1870 whereas the census records “Ann Hamilton” as 55 in that census. This appears to have been a recording mistake as the family rosters are consistent. Two of the four children listed in the 1860 census also appear with Ann Hamilton in the 1870 census. The 5-yo “Joseph A. Hamilton” in the 1860 census is probably the 14-yo “Arthur Hamilton” in the 1870 census and the 1-yo “Robert W. Hamilton” in the 1860 census corresponds to the 12-yo “Robert Hamilton” in the 1870 census. The two older children, Narceta and Jane, would have been old enough by 1870 to have left home. The other 3 children listed in 1870, Phoebe, Alonzo and James, would have been born between the time of the 1860 census and the death of James W. Hamilton in 1864. Note that Phoebe Ann’s age was also incorrectly reported in the 1880 and 1900 census.
