Robert C. (Bob) Barton Jr., proud son of Central Texas, family man, newspaperman, politician and mentor to many - and a staunch believer in social justice - died January 19, on the birthdate of his hero Martin Luther King Jr. He was 82.
Barton served in the Texas Legislature and was known throughout Central Texas as an influential political operative who mentored numerous successful candidates.
An unabashed liberal and lifelong Democrat, he believed in FDR's New Deal, JFK's idealism, LBJ's Great Society and was a strong supporter of full participation in the political process by everyone, often leading to strong disapproval from the political establishment. As a staunch supporter of education, he helped in the early desegregation of local schools and was proud of his role in the formation of Hays Consolidated Independent School District.
Barton was born on April 5, 1930 to long-time Buda residents, Robert C. Barton and Marietta Fly Barton. A product of the Buda schools, Barton earned a degree from Texas State University and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, stationed in Germany.
Bob and Wynette Word of Kyle were married in 1955 and had two sons, Jefferson Word, a businessman who served as Precinct 1 Hays County Commissioner, and David Gilbreath Slaughter, a professor at Northern New Mexico College. Wynette is a Jungian psychoanalyst practicing in Austin and Kyle.
In 1952, Barton entered the newspaper world with the purchase of the Kyle News, which eventually became the award-winning newspaper, Hays County Citizen. Later established several other newspapers, including the Hays Free Press, an award winner among Texas newspapers. A lover of Central Texas lore, Barton devoted his last few years to historical research, and still wrote occasionally for the Hays Free Press.
Besides his wife Wynette (Tutta) and sons, Bob is survived by his daughters-in-law Cyndy Slovak-Barton and Jolana Jan-isova Barton, four grandchildren, Zachary Alexander, Mary Rose Bozena, Katrina Wynette (Katka) and Jakub Sterling Adam (Kuba). Also surviving are Nancy Word and John Osood of Austin and their family, Jane Word and Calvin Kirkham and their family, Nephews Clint Younts and Clay Younts, niece Kathy Younts Flake, cousin Lou Porter Bailey and her family, and many beloved friends and former employees.
A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 26 at the Old Rock Gym at Kyle Elementary at 500 Blanco Street, followed by a luncheon.
