Mrs Helen Pruitt Bettie, 80, of Redlands, a pioneer resident of the San Bernardino Valley, died Sunday in a Redlands hospital.
Born in Owensville, Ind., in 1875, Mrs Beattie came to this area about 70 years ago. She was a resident of East Highlands 40 years and had lived in Redlands for the last 5 years.
After graduating from San Bernardino schools, she attended the University of California at Berkeley. She was the first teacher in Lytle Creek. Prior to her marriage on July 29, 1901, to the late George William Beattie, she was a teacher in San Bernardino schools.
A week after marriage she and Beattie sailed for the Philippines where he had a position as division superintendent of schools on the island of Negros, They returned to the United States in 1911.
While in the Philippines three children were born. One child died before it was a year old. The other two are Helen Beattie Bradley of Alhambra and George F Beattie of east Highlands.
Mrs Beattie completed her university course many years later, receiving an A.B. degree from the University of Redlands and a M.A. degree from that school in 1936 at the age of 60. Part of the M.A. thesis was included in the very comprehensive volume of San Bernardino Valley history "The Heritage of the Valley," which she and her husband wrote.
Mrs Beattie was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution; the contemporary Club of Redlands, since 1914; was for two years state chairman of the California History and Landmarks Committee of the State Federation of Women's Clubs; member of the Presbyterian church; member of the Cram School Board of Eat Highlands from 1917 to 1927;and an active member of the San Bernardino County Historical Society.
Survivors include her two children, a sister, Mrs. Joanna Pruitt Leonard of San Bernardino and four grandchildren, Robert and Barbara Bradley and Geoffrey and Karen Beattie.
Private funeral services at F Arthur Cortner Mortuary, Redlands and interment at Hillside Cemetery.
