Notes for Lt. Col. Nicholas Hill
Nicholas Hill, in 1635, patented 100 acres in Elizabeth City Co. for his own importation and a servant’s.1863

Nicholas Hill was first Major and then Lt. Col. of Isle of Wight Militia. He represented the County in the House of Burgesses, September 1663 and October 1666.1858

He made his will 1 Jan 1674 and a complete summary is given in the Isle of Wight County Records.1810 His will specifies that he “be buried near his deceased wife and children as may be”, presumably referring to his unknown first wife since Sylvester Hill is bequeathed his plantation, and did not die until 1706. The will also mentions his six children by Sylvester and three by “a former wife.”

Sons: Richard Hill, Ralph Hill, George Hill, Nicholas
Daughters: Agnes Hill, Martha, Mary, Anna, Elizabeth Hill

He named as overseers his friends Major James Powell, Mr. Thomas Taberer, Mr. Wm. Bressie and John Jennings. The will was sealed on 19 Apr 1675 and proved by the oath of Mr. Jhn Newman 20 Oct 1675 and by Mrs. Mary Davis 21 Oct 1675.
Notes for Silvestra (Spouse 2)
In the book “Marriages of Isle of Wight County, Virginia, 1628-1800,” on page 24 is listed “Nicholas Hill and Silvestra Bennett, daughter of Edward Bennett, 1675 (Will & Deed Book 2, p. 133.” This listing might appear to be an error, since Nicholas Hill made his will in 1675 and mentioned six children by his wife Silvester and the couple patented land together in 1664. However, I think the real intent of this reference is that it was the 16k75 will that established that Nicholas Hill had been married to Sylvestra Bennett.

On 30 Sept 1664, Lt. Col. Nicholas Hill and his wife Sylvester received a patent of 750 acres in Isle of Wight, “Being the moiety of 1500 acres of land appurtaining unto the said Sylvester and her sister, who were daughters and co-heirs of Mr. Edward Bennett, deceased, by the riverside in a valley called the Rock.”1864

Sylvestra’s will was signed and sealed 20 Oct 1706 and proved 9 Jan 1706/07. The will does not mention any of her children.1810
