He attended and graduated from Jourdanton High School.

He then attended A&M College, where he studied animal husbandry. He was employed as manger of the Mary Hardin Baylor Female College dairy farms. He held this position for several years.

On returning to Atascosa County, he became engaged in ranching.

On July 19, 1926, in Pueblo, Colorado, he and Alta McDonald were married. Alta, a school teacher, was the daughter of Abe and Laura McDonald of Rossville, Texas. Travis bought some acreage and established a home.

He served in this capacity for several more terms. While serving as commissioner, he was instrumental to widening and paving some important roads in the precinct, one them, Highway 16.

The drought of the 1950's was a difficult time for ranchers, so Travis moved his wife and family to San Marcos, Texas, where they could receive a college education.
Due to ill health, Travis retired from his ranching activities. He passed away on July 25, 1965 at the age of 71 years.
