Dempsey Powell (d. 1793) was born and died in Wake County, N. C. His home was north of Neuse River and probably two or three miles south of Wake Forest. He married twice; first Nancy Dempsey, and later Pleasant Benton, first cousin to Harry Benton who was the father of Thomas Benton.

CHILDREN, as named in the will of his son, Dempsey Powell, under date of June 27, 1823, and on file in the Clerk of Court's Office of Wake County, North Carolina:

Dempsey Powell (b. 1760-70; d. 1831-2), married Polly Baugh. Lived in Wake County, N. C.
Benton Powell (b. 1755-74; d. 1800-23), married (???); father of James B. Powell, who married Elizabeth I. Fowler in 1833.
Charlotte Powell (1774-1828), married John Sims (1772-1832).
Jesse Powell (b. 1780-90; d. 1840-50), married Mildred Brown (b. 1800; d. after June 30, 1850). Lived in Wake County, N. C.
Caswell Powell (b. 1774-84; d. 1814), married Betsey (???). Lived in Wake County, N. C.
Mildred Powell (1785-1845), married John Streeter, Jr. (1780-1808) in 1803. Lived in Bedford County, Tenn.
Elizabeth Powell married Robert Temple.
Cloey Powell married James Fort, son of John and Franky (Broadwell) Fort, on December 4, 1787.
Patsy Powell (d. prior to June 27, 1823), married John Fort (d. Dec. 31, 1836), son of John and Franky (Broadwell) Fort, on Dec. 4, 1797.

Dempsey Powell built a house in Wake Co NC in the latter part of the 18th century that was used as the family residence until 1815, which a larger house was build nearby. Both houses still stand and are amoung the oldest structures in Wake County.2898
