The father of Clara Groos was Herman Groos, son of Jacob and Katharine Groos,
3192 who settled in New Braunfels with the German settlement of about 1845. Jacob was, according to the 1870 census, "Agent and Landlord" for Jacob Schmitz, whose property was valued at $10,000. Jacob Schmitz operated a luxurious hotel on the town square in New Braunfels, so it seems that Jacob Groos must have been the on-site proprieter. Herman was a bar-keeper, presumably in the hotel. Furthermore, Jacob Schmitz, who owned the hotel, lived just four farms away from Jacob Brecher.
3193However, it seems from the foregoing census record that Louise and Herman separated before the 1880 census and that Herman Groos remarried:
Herman Groos, 31, Comal Co, with 23-year old wife Allan and 1-year old dau Ottilie
Ellen (recorded as Ellen in 1900 and 1920 and Helen in 1910, but Allan in 1880). Ellen was 8 years younger than Jacob Groos. They moved to Hays Co and Herman died there in 1929. His full name was Ludwig Herman Groos.
