Dinorbus Pennington Harthcock was born on March 18, 1851 in Holmes County, Mississippi. He was the sixth child of John Godfrey Harthcock and Naomi P. Tolar. He married Martha Ann “Matt” Talley in 1873 in Holmes County, MS. She was the daughter of William W. Talley and his wife Mary. There is very little known at this time about her parents.

Dinorbus and Matt had five children who were all born in Holmes County, Mississippi: 1) Mary Naomi, known as Mamie, was born on October 30, 1873; she married Phillip William Ables on January 16, 1893 in Holmes County, Mississippi. He was the son of William Allen Ables and Elizabeth A. Roby. Mamie and Phillip had ten children; four daughters and six sons. Mamie and Phillip raised all of their children in Holmes County. Mamie died on July 20, 1937 and is buried in the Harlands Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Harlands Creek Community, Holmes County, MS. 2) James “Jack” Henry who was born on March 24, 1876 and married Willie Malone on December 20, 1899 in Holmes County, Mississippi. She was the daughter of Daniel Webster Malone and Mary “Molly” Eva Thomas. Jack and Willie had eleven children, three daughters and eight sons. They lived in and raised their children in Holmes County. Jack died on January 23, 1950 in Holmes County and is buried in the Malone Cemetery, Holmes County, MS. 3) Joseph Raiford, who was known as Big Raif, was born on October 15, 1878 and married Lillie Ann Wade on December 11, 1901 in Holmes County, MS. She was the daughter of John B. Wade and Annie Liza Davis. Big Raif and Lillie Ann had two daughters. He owned a large amount of land in the Harlands Creek Community. Raif died on October 11, 1963 in Holmes County and is buried in the Harlands Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Holmes County, MS. 4) Laura Annie was born on January 15, 1881 and married Charles R. Woodard in 1920 in Humphreys County, MS. He was the son of John Woodard and Mary Wade. Laura Annie and Charles had five children, three daughters and two sons. Laura Annie died on September 14, 1919 and is buried in the Harlands Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Harlands Creek Community, Holmes County, MS. 5) Viola was born on February 1, 1882 and married Simpson Agie Killebrew on January 4, 1899 in Holmes County, MS. He was the son of Robert S. Killebrew and Mary Ann “Molly” Ragland. Viola and Simpson Agie had six children, four daughters and two sons. They raised their children in Holmes County where they lived until their death. Viola died on May 23, 1927 and is buried in Ebenezer Methodist Church Cemetery, Ebenezer, Holmes County, Mississippi.

Very little is known about Dinorbus. He died while his children were young and his wife remarried. Her second husband, David Allen Killebrew, raised Dinorbus’ children.

The 1880 census listed Dinorbus as living in Beat 4 in Holmes County when the census was taken. His occupation was listed as a farmer; there was no property value listed. He lived next door to his brother, William Edward. His brother John Louis lived next door to William Edward and their father, John Godfrey, lived next door to William Louis. The family members apparently got along well since they all lived very close together at this time. Four years after this census was taken Dinorbus was dead. His cause of death is unknown; he could have had an accident on the farm or could have died from an illness. I suspect he died from an illness such as yellow fever or choLera as several Harthcock relatives died in 1884.

Dinorbus Pennington Harthcock died on March 12, 1884 and is buried in Locust Grove Cemetery, Zeiglerville,Yazoo County, Mississippi. Several of his immediate family are also buried in this cemetery.
