According to the research of Harry Stanz,2298 Samuel Hammond was born in Fairfax Co VA. He received a pension for service in the Revolutionary War. The family apparently lived in Warren and Granville Counties NC and moved to Kershaw Co SC in 1782-84. About 1810 he took his family west to the Mississippi Territory and settled in the area that became Clarke Co AL. With him on the trek to Alabama were sons Samuel Sims, Lemuel, Sherwood, Mathias and William Raleigh and daughters Elizabeth, Charlotte, Mary and Sarah, all of whom married in Alabama.

Samuel Hammond and his family relocated from Kershaw Co to the Tombigbee River area of the Mississippi Territory in 1808. He is listed on the 1810 census of the Mississippi Territory, as is his son Mathias.2299

Samuel Hammond was not located in the 1830 census.

1840 Census of Sumter Co AL

Saml Hammond 1 M 80-90 [listed next to Sherrod Hammond and near Samuel, Matthias & Wm Hammond] It is noted on the census record that he was 88 years of age and a pensioner for Revolutionary War service.

There is a monument to him in the Hammond Cemetery in Kershaw Co. The cemetery is on the Kershaw-Lancaster county line, between Heath Springs and Stonsboro. It is about two miles south of Baeyer Creek Baptist Church.2298 The inscription on the monument reads:2301
