Martha Ann Lay is only found once in the historical record--the 1860 census, when she was 12 years of age. She was not listed with the family in the 1870 census, but it would not have been unreasonable for her to have married by then, as she would have been 22.

In any event, she appears to have died before June 28, 1918, as she was not mentioned in the obituary of her brother, Francis Marion Lay.229
